On a global scale, we are extracting water from underground sources much faster than they can regenerate. Growing pollution and intensive use increase the need for responsible management and careful planning of future water use.
How much water do you use?
- Households use from 10 to 40% of all pumped water. On average, 11 to 20 liters per minute flow from an open tap. If we let the water run all the time, a family of three to four uses 30 to 40 liters of dishwashing by hand, while a dishwasher uses only 18 to 27 liters of water for the same job.
- Every time we flush the toilet, approximately 9 liters of clean water instantly turns into dirty water.
- If the water is not shut off, up to 140 liters of water can be used in five minutes of showering, and up to 250 liters when bathing in a bathtub.
- If we leave the faucet open while brushing our teeth, we use 20 to 40 liters more water than if we close the faucet while brushing our teeth.
