Opportunities for cooperation can be seen especially in joint events that include all local providers, tourism stakeholders, companies, the civil sector, the public sector, etc. One of the key sustainability stories is the execution of the event without waste. An example of good practice from Slovenia:
Marathon of three hearts ZERO WASTE EVENT
Project description (environmental aspect): Radenska is the general sponsor of the Marathon of Three Hearts event. 40 of them have already taken place in Radenci and an additional 2 virtual ones during the Covid period in 2020 and 2021. For this year’s event, we have set ourselves the goal of a zero-waste event. We teamed up with Ecologists Without Borders and together we designed everything necessary to make the event zero waste.
The results we achieved:
Date: 21 May 2022
Number of visitors: 4500 (active visitors)
Measured total amount of waste in 2022: 700 kg.
Reduction in the amount of waste compared to the previous year: /
Percentage of separately collected waste in 2021: 91%
Effective separate collection of waste is the result of efficient planning, visible and accessible placement of ecological islands, closing of existing containers for mixed municipal waste and, above all, the efforts of the staff who direct visitors to the correct disposal of waste.
At the event, 700 kg of waste was collected, of which 60 kg was mixed municipal waste, and the largest share was packaging. The collected data is the basis for upgrading efforts in the coming years, especially in preventing the generation of waste and reducing its total amount.
Evaluation: Amount of separately collected waste.
Expected result: At least 90% of separately collected waste, which is a requirement for the zero-waste level.
