In the 21st century, three challenges are coming to the fore – food, energy and water. Many economic activities and areas of life depend on water resources. This includes the supply of drinking water, irrigation in agriculture, to the provision of water resources for transport, energy, tourism and nature.
The consequences of unregulated depletion of water resources are manifested in the degradation of entire ecosystems. Floods are the consequences of inadequate spatial planning. An approach to water protection is needed from the global level, through the national, regional level to each responsible individual (Voda in izzivi vzdržnega razvoja v Sloveniji in po svetu, 2020).
