Water is a basic condition for the life of people, animals and plants, as well as for the economy. Water protection and management do not stop at national borders. The Water Framework Directive of the European Union sets the framework for the protection and preservation of clean water in the European Union and for its long-term and sustainable use. It is supplemented by special legislation, including the Drinking Water Directive, the Bathing Water Directive, the Floods Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, as well as international treaties (EUROPARL – Cristian Kurrer, 2021).
Urban water management focuses on three key services for the population:
- drainage of surface runoff to prevent flooding,
- water supply with clean drinking water and
- draining and cleaning the resulting wastewater to ensure the health of the population (Petrol , 2022).
