To protect ecosystems (both natural and artificial), it would be ideal to adopt the Nature Based Solutions (NBS), series of actions inspired, supported or literally copied from nature; a relatively recent concept used by the European Commission to identify nature-based strategies, actions, interventions that provide environmental services and socio-economic benefits, capable of increasing resilience in natural and urban environments.
Four main objectives can be identified that can be addressed with “nature-based solutions” (NBS):
- Stimulating Sustainable Urbanization through nature-based solutions (NBS) can stimulate economic growth and improvement of the environment, making cities more attractive and improving human well-being;
- Restoring degraded ecosystems through nature-based solutions can improve the resilience of ecosystems, enabling them to provide vital ecosystem services and to address other societal challenges
- developing climate change adaptation and mitigation using NBS can provide more resilient responses and improve biological carbon storage
- Improving risk management and resilience through Nature based Solutions can lead to greater benefits over conventional methods and offer synergies in multiple risk reduction.
The purpose of NBS is also to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) defined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030:
